STATEMENT OF MAYOR CARLO DEMARIA, AUGUST 24, 2014

I am extremely disheartened over the recent article written about me in the Boston Globe. Let me be clear- at no time have I acted in the manner described by any of the alleged incidents. These allegations are simply not true.  I would never do anything to jeopardize my marriage to my wife of 18 years, nor would I do anything that could harm or jeopardize my children's future.

"I am extremely disheartened over the recent article written about me in the Boston Globe. Let me be clear- at no time have I acted in the manner described by any of the alleged incidents. These allegations are simply not true.  I would never do anything to jeopardize my marriage to my wife of 18 years, nor would I do anything that could harm or jeopardize my children's future.

I own and operate a number of successful local small businesses. In the time in which I have been in business, I have employed hundreds of individuals. In the course of my business, on two different occasions, employees made allegations in retaliation for their terminations.  On both occasions, those allegations were completely unfounded and determined to be without merit.

In the 2005 allegation, both a court magistrate and a district court judge determined that there was not sufficient probable cause to support the allegation and dismissed the complaint. Put simply, sufficient probable cause could not be found because the incident never happened. Instead, the allegation was the result of an angry former employee seeking revenge upon her termination.

In the 2006 allegation, I terminated an employee for insubordination.  I called the Revere Police Department after a verbal argument ensued.  The Revere Police, following an investigation, did not find evidence to show cause and pursue the matter further.  Again, this was an incident that never happened and was a complaint made by an angry former employee.

I would also like to say that the article is erroneous in stating that additional allegations exist.  These are the two sole allegations and both were dismissed by the proper authorities and determined to be without merit.

During my time at the City of Everett, as a City Councilor, Alderman and as Mayor, no complaints for sexual harassment have been brought against me by any city employee, current or former.  No complaints have been brought against me by any constituent, resident or visitor.  At no time have I acted in a manner that could be construed as sexual harassment.  I have checked with the City’s Human Resources Department and the City’s Legal Department and they have never received a complaint alleging wrongdoing on my part.

The City of Everett is a political place. We are in the middle of a battle for a casino license that could change the future of this city forever.  It is obvious that some are willing to go to any and all lengths, including purporting lies, to keep Everett from succeeding.

I will continue to work tirelessly for the people of Everett as I have for the past twenty years and refuse to waste any more time and energy on useless distractions based upon patent untruths.  I have faith that the people of Everett will see through this clear attempt to destroy the hard work and strong community we have created and continue to band together for the best Everett."
